I. Grammar

Tenses to describe line graphs showing data from past to future

Typically the graphs are presented with a past timeframe. However, sometimes you may have to report a graph in the future.

When you are presented with a line graph to analyze (or a bar graph if it is over time) you should always look carefully to check what time frame is being referred to.

NOTE: Line graph from past to future:
  • Past simple: describe trends in the past. (90%)
  • Future simple (will + V): describe trends in a period of time in the future. (10%)
  • Future perfect (will + have + Vpp2): describe trends y a specific time in the future. (Read more)
  • Passive: (be + Vpp2 to V).
  • is/are expected to
  • is/are set to
  • is/are predicted that/to
  • is/are anticipated that/to
  • is/are likely to
  • is/are likely to
  • No time -> Simple present
